If you have the time, money and or patience, attend fashion school. If you are like most, and feel school isn’t for you, attend a trade school or find an apprenticeship. Anything that can help accelerate your knowledge will be beneficial for you.

Step 2 – The 10,000.00 Hour Rule.

You have to practice your craft, at all times. Not just when it feels right. The only way you will be successful as a designer is if you put in the time and effort.   

Step 3 – Business of Fashion.

This is critical to you success – mastering the business side of fashion. It’s important you understand how money flows into you business and most importantly how money flows from your business.

Your success as an designer will be determined on how well you can run a budget and stick to it. This will take discipline, effort and help. So be sure you’re working with trustworthy and credible people.

Step 4 – Build a Portfolio.

Building a portfolio will allow you to showcase your work in a professional manner, highlighting your skills. As well as showing the detailed process of your design work.

Step 5 – Market Research.

Know your customer, I repeat, you need to know your customer. Like the back of your hand.

In today’s world, data is king and the only way we obtain data is through market research.

You need to know who, what, where when you customer is active. What pulls this group to make decisions and ultimately  how you’re going to provide value. Market research is just as important as balancing your book. It can make you or break you.

Some designers earn considerably more, especially those who own their own successful fashion design company and design clothes for wealthy people and celebrities.

They can easily make a few million dollars each year, or hundreds of thousands a month.

On the other end of the spectrum, entry-level designers or designers who have not had much success might earn $30,000 or less each year, or less than $2,500 a month.
